Great article. I started a church in April 2006 – I had 150 people at my first service, 22 members on my Church Planting Team, and $60,000 in the bank – and 3 years later I closed the church. It really rocked me. I felt so embarrassed and humbled. In looking back, I see how “unteachable” I was. Since before I planted, I grew our Young Adult Ministry from 12-450, so I thought I knew something. Church planting humbled me and showed me how much I really didn’t know.

What I’d love to know is, how did you get the courage to start again? I feel like perhaps I have been over-humbled, now I wonder if I can ever do it again. To be honest, I’ve been working as a sales person now for a few years, and while I always think about planting again, I keep hearing this voice “you couldn’t do it last time, why do you think you can do it next time”. Did you ever deal with anything like that?

Just thought I’d reach out and ask…

Great article. I have been switching more and more churches to WordPress. You can have a great looking site inexpensively if you use WordPress.

Churches could be much farther ahead if they simply did one thing. Make your title tag (those words that appears in the browser tag) include the following: Church name (+ plus the word “church” somewhere if your church name doesn’t include the word), City name, and one extra keyword that matches your church need such as contemporary, traditional, rock music, denomination, (or evenKJVOnly for some churches!) That would help their SEO tremendously. grovechurch.com is a good example of using the title tag in this way.

Good point. I think the solution is for churches to have their blog built into their website. WordPress and other content management systems can help with this.

Great article Steve. I have successfully planted in Texas, Florida, and now Michigan and hands down the reasons you listed for success are on the top. My degree is in marketing and I think it would be good to do a conference on image and presentation for church plants. Good suggestion on the name of your church as well. Google is the new way to connect…we get 10 – 12 people a week from our Adwords, and spend about 30$. That’s cheap! Keep up the great work!

I am checking on the availablity of the block party trailer for June 24th at Mt. Carmel Church for Fun Night ( the last day of our VBS).
I’d also like to know if it’s available for our Sunday School picnic on July 16th.
