Hype Man

This post is taken from Gary Lamb’s blog on December 5, 2008 at 10:38 am. One thing he was really good at was getting people excited about coming to church and what God was doing at his church. This post outlines how and why he was good at it. I found this post when I was wanting to learn more about how to better market and promote our church. When I read it I felt extremely convicted for not being excited about what God was doing at our church. It has changed the way I talk about my church and what is going on there. I’ve found that when I talk about what’s going on, it’s contageous. Below is the origional post with some minor edits:
I have had SEVERAL pastors over the last few years tell me that I hype things way to much. They joke that I think every Sunday is going to be the best Sunday ever, that I think every series is going to be the biggest and best one yet. They love to point out that I am always looking for a way to create energy, excitement, etc. It’s hard to argue when they talk about the fact that I hype everything, so I’ve really just ignored them in the past.
This got me thinking about WHY I hype stuff so much. To be honest, I don’t put a lot of thought in it. It is who I am and comes pretty naturally, but I also don’t want people to think I’m being fake when I do it. I started writing in my journal several things that jack me up and why I feel they are worthy of being hyped as much as they can!
- First of all, I am honestly hyped about what God is doing!!! I understand this is a hard concept for a lot of people to understand because they hate their jobs, but I love what I do with everything that is in my life! Sadly most people hate what they do, even pastors. The fact that I get to be part of this church blows my mind! The fact that lives get changed every week pumps me up!! The fact that God gave me a vision and I get to see it unfold jacks me out of my mind!!
- I believe EVERY Sunday is going to be life-changing!!! Some churches do what they call big days and they pull out all the stops and try to get everyone to invite their friends on these days. I believe EVERY Sunday is a big day. I don’t take for granted that people have given time out of their busy schedules to be in a service at church. I see how much planning, work, prep, and creativity goes into EVERY service we do and I anticipate that every Sunday that God is doing to do HUGE things!! We get 52 Sundays a year to make an impact in someone’s life through our worship services. EVERY Sunday is a big Sunday and is worthy of my excitement!!!!
- People love being part of something ALIVE. One of the biggest compliments I’ve ever gotten from a consultant we brought in was one who said more then anything, when he walked through our doors, he could sense the excitement that something big was about to happen. People live their whole life going through the motions and dealing with routine. I want them to know we serve a God who is ALIVE!!! If we can get excited about the Georgia Bulldogs, Falcons, Braves, and Hawks (no one gets excited about Georgia Tech) then how much more excited should we get about Jesus!!!!!!
- I’m the leader!!! I don’t know a pastor anywhere that doesn’t want his people excited about what is happening at their church. Yet, most pastors act like they could care less. I am the leader of the church. I am the man God has called to lead the church. That means I need to lead. I REFUSE to allow someone else be more excited about what God is doing at my church then me. I refuse!! No one is going to love my church more then me, buy into the vision more then me, or worship harder then me. It is my job to lead the charge and if I don’t feel every Sunday is going to be the best Sunday ever then why I am doing it?!?!?!?!
- The world hypes their CRAP!!! Billboards, commercials, websites, etc. all are hyping the crap the world has to offer so how much more should I hype that Jesus Christ is the answer!! My competition isn’t other churches, but MTV, Coldplay, Sporting events or anything else that is fighting to draw people’s attention away from Christ.
- We have the answer!!! Do you realize that Jesus Christ gave His life where you and I can have a personal relationship with him??? If that doesn’t blow your mind, then hang it up!!!! Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life!!! He’s the answer to whatever question is asked. We get to make Him famous and that deserves the ultimate hype and buzz being created!!!
So I understand that people read this blog and laugh about how I’m always hyping and creating buzz. However they must not understand that Jesus is WHY I do it. I actually have a harder time understanding why more pastors DON’T get excited and hype what God is doing around them then I do why I DO get excited and hype what God is doing at my church.
