Whiteboard Recap

Last Friday I was able to attend Whiteboard with my whole team. I’ve never been able to go to a conference with everyone I worked with at a church. Here’s the benefits:
- By including even the volunteer staff members and the part-time staff members, you’re communicating to them their true value to you and the church.
- It can instantly create or adjust the shared values of your entire staff. When a speaker does a good job at driving home a point and it’s fueled by the convicting power of the Holy Spirit, instantly all the key players in your church are moving at the same speed. There are moments that happen at every good conference (and Whiteboard had several of them) where you are so moved that you want to act on it immediately. When you have to go back and try to convince your staff that wasn’t at the conference about an idea, vision, or conviction; often times you never get past that point.
- It gives us all a shared language which increases intimacy, teamwork, and the speed at which we can communicate complex values. For instance, Tony Morgan talked about how when every event in the church gets an equal opportunity to promote stuff to the congregation, the message gets confusing if not ignored completely. He referred to car dealers resorting to putting a giant inflatable blue monkey in their yard to attract attention. When ever an event needs promoting, no matter what it is, “It’s Blue Monkey Time.” That’s become a part of the language of our staff meetings
- It gives your staff some insight into what you go through as a pastor. It’s impossible to communicate what it’s like to be the pastor of a church to your staff without coming across as arrogant. Most ever conference has at least one or two speakers that say what needs to be said to your staff that you just can’t say as the pastor.
Even if you can’t go to a big time national conference like Whiteboard together, you might be able to find a good one close by that’s put on by a local church or state mission organization. Ben Arment who put on Whiteboard has got another great conference planned for next fall. Check it out here: Story
