Whiteboard Sessions – John Tyson

Whiteboard Sessions – John Tyson

Jon Tyson is lead pastor of Trinity Grace Church in New York City. I had never heard of John Tyson before the conference, but I thought he was one of the best speakers of the day. His talk reminded me of listening to Jim Cymbala. You just sat there mesmerized by the power with which he spoke. He started with one of the funniest lines I’ve heard, “This is not one of those you suck at loving God kind of talks.” My notes on what he said after that line are as follows:

  • It’s possible to build a great ministry that is known by lots of people, but unknown to God.
  • Revelation: (Church in Ephesus) They maintained integrity and doctrinal soundness and worked hard to build the church up….but they had forsaken their first love.
  • For the church in Ephesus, Having a great pastor isn’t enough. If you have the right pastor, the church will have the right foundation and the people will love God. It doesn’t work like this: If your pastor loves God the church people will love God. Paul planted the church, but 40 years later they don’t love God. Then they had Timothy. Then John went there to be their pastor. A great pastor doesn’t ensure a great lasting ministry.
  • For the church in Ephesus, The miraculous wasn’t enough.
  • For the church in Ephesus, Being missional wasn’t enough.
  • For the church in Ephesus, Discipleship wasn’t enough.
  • Doctrine wasn’t enough, (Pharisees are the ones that missed God.)
  • For the church in Ephesus, none of those things was enough to keep it’s passion for God.
  • Jesus will not be unequally yoked.  Lukewarm church does not invite the heart of God.
  • The Bible never commands you to remain in how you feel about God. Rather, to remain in how God feels about us. Remember where you are in union with Jesus.
  • Task as a leader is to help people remain in Christ. If that’s not your primary task you are creating a cult, based on legalism, and works, and so on. We’re not distributing culture, but the life of God in man.
  • The father blesses you for who you are, not what you’ve done.  You can’t impress God and make him love you or make him bless you.
  • We’re dependent on strategy because we’re bankrupt on the power of God. Joseph went from the prison to the palace in a day, you can’t plan that.  We don’t imagine what is possible. Jesus split history in half in three years… in God’s power.

If you missed the conference and want the experience, you can order the DVD of it here. Jon Tyson’s talk alone was worth the price of admission, or in your case the price of the DVD.  Just think, for $59 you can watch it with your whole staff.
