Whiteboard Sessions – Tony Morgan

Tony Morgan is the author of Killing Cockroaches and has served at Granger Community Church, New Spring Church, and is now at West Ridge. He posted his notes on his talk on his website here. Here’s some of the things I wrote down from what he shared at WIBO:
- Ministry is an opportunity to help people take their next step to be closer to Christ. Everything we do is help people take their next step. The goal is a fully devoted follower of Christ.
- Sit down with your ministry team, what does a fully devoted follower of Christ look like? It’s hard to describe sometimes. When it is hard to describe it’s next to impossible to do. Clarity brings intentionality.
- Fewer Options leads to a great chance that someone will actually take action. If you’re giving people too many options, they might have a paralysis of analysis.
- Are we really helping people become a fully devoted follower of Christ? It’s hard to measure life change. We need to figure out how to measure it or identify it. Begin asking the question, “Is what we are doing impacting people and getting them closer to God?”
- What requires a major platform announcement to succeed? Prioritize the message: Life isn’t fair and then you die. If we communicate everything with the same value: what we’re saying is all the things we’re doing is equally important.
- What’s the one voice we want to have heard?
- How is it that a car dealer ends up putting a Giant Inflatable Blue Monkey on top of their building? It begins with the question, “How can we sell more cars?” I got an idea, why don’t we build better cars. Why don’t we improve the customer experience? No, all those things take time and effort, Why don’t we get a giant inflatable blue monkey? In the end, louder and more and bigger promotion becomes the answer to everything.
- Promoting better is not the key to our discipleship process. What gets people there isn’t what we use to promote things. 75-80% come based on invitation. But once they get here, we switch to promotion and we go to Blue Monkey time…
